How Echo Shift works
A symbol appears in the center of the card. After the first symbol, a new one replaces it every time you answer. Your task is to judge whether the current symbol matches the one shown immediately before — not the one you see now, but the one you just saw.
This creates a mental split: you must register the new symbol while still holding the previous one in your memory. Each correct answer adds to your score and streak. Streak bonuses kick in at five consecutive correct answers.
What this game challenges
Echo Shift is a one-back attention exercise. It practices working memory, focused attention, and the ability to update your mental state one step behind the present moment.
The challenge is not the symbols themselves — they are simple shapes. The challenge is sustaining the mental two-step of holding the previous symbol while evaluating the new one without mixing them up.
Tips for a better score
Say the symbol name in your head as it appears. This verbal rehearsal can help anchor it in working memory during the brief gap before the next one appears.

How does Echo Shift work?

Yes. A streak of 5 or more correct answers earns an extra point per correct answer until the streak breaks.
